field trip: the birthplace of saranac

Saranac beers are a favorite with Hamilton students, whether they like one of its seasonal brews, like Pumpkin Ale in the autumn, or its core beers, such as Pale Ale. But what is the story behind this College favorite? It’s worth a visit to the home of Saranac—the Matt Brewing Company in Utica— on an idle Friday afternoon or during the weekend to find the answer.

The Brewing Company has a strong local presence and a rich history in Central New York. It was started under the leadership of F.X. Matt in 1888 after he created the West End Brewing Company. It quickly became the most popular company among the twelve other competing breweries in the Utica area, and eventually emerged as the primary provider in Central New York. Based on its strong reputation as a high quality beer, Saranac is clearly a solid favorite in the Utica area.

Take a one-hour tour of the brewery if you want to explore more about the beer-making process or the history behind the Matt Brewery Company. Tours are offered during the school year on Fridays and Saturdays from 1 P.M. until 3 P.M. At the end of the tour, visitors get an added bonus—a sample beer of choice. Of course, the only problem will be choosing which one you want the most.
